How many high-rise apartment buildings are in the Loop?
Counting a high-rise as a building with 12 or more floors, all 15 apartment buildings in the Loop are high-rises, with 4,858 apartments. They range from 14 to 59 floors, with a median of 33. Across all 17 neighborhoods, 196 of the 290 buildings have 12 or more floors; the “12+ floors” column in the table above gives the count for each neighborhood.
What percentage of Chicago apartment buildings are pet friendly?
287 of the 290 buildings in the directory (99.0%) are pet friendly, meaning the building accepts dogs, cats or both under its own policy. That share describes these 290 mostly large apartment buildings, not every rental in Chicago; individual buildings set their own breed, weight and fee rules. The pet-friendly buildings page lists them.
How many Chicago apartment buildings have in-unit laundry, parking, a gym or air conditioning?
| Amenity | Buildings | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Pet-friendly | 287 of 290 | 99.0% |
| Gym or fitness center | 262 of 290 | 90.3% |
| Air conditioning | 215 of 290 | 74.1% |
| In-building parking | 237 of 290 | 81.7% |
| In-unit laundry | 207 of 290 | 71.4% |
Each figure counts buildings whose record confirms the amenity. Where a record does not confirm it, the building is not counted, so treat each share as a minimum.
How old are Chicago apartment buildings?
The median year built is 2014, so the typical building in the directory is about 12 years old. The average year built is 1997, pulled earlier by a smaller number of older buildings. 142 buildings were built in 2015 or later, 174 in 2010 or later, and 66 before 1980. These figures cover 289 of the 290 buildings; 400 Lake Shore Drive has no year built on record.
How close are Chicago apartment buildings to the L?
The median distance from a building to its nearest CTA ‘L’ station is 0.2 mi. 253 of the 290 buildings with a station on record are within half a mile. Each building’s page names its nearest station and lines.
What changed since the Fall 2026 edition?
The Fall 2026 edition was first published on September 23, 2026, when the directory used 13 neighborhoods, and was recalculated on October 21, 2026. On October 19, 2026 the directory moved from 13 to 17 neighborhoods: combined areas such as Gold Coast / Old Town, West Loop / Fulton Market and Streeterville / Lakeshore East became separate neighborhoods, and 62 buildings moved to a different neighborhood. First-edition figures such as “River North 43” or “West Loop / Fulton Market 42” used the earlier layout and are out of date; the counts on this page replace them.
The directory-wide totals did not change: 290 buildings and 79,170 apartments. Some amenity shares are higher than in the first edition, such as pet-friendly (96.6% then) and in-building parking (73.8% then), because building records have since been checked, filled in and corrected; each correction is logged on the Data Updates page.
Where do these figures come from?
All figures were computed on October 22, 2026 from the directory’s building records. Medians are rounded to whole floors and years, and distances to one decimal place; a distance listed as under 0.1 mile counts as 0.05 for the median. A building with two floor counts (two towers) counts its first. Neighborhoods are listed A to Z; the directory does not rank buildings or neighborhoods. The full per-neighborhood breakdown is on the building data page, and every building can be searched by neighborhood, CTA line and amenity in Ask Joey.
