All Lakeview

Lakeview is a Chicago neighborhood on the city’s North Side, one of Chicago’s 77 official community areas. It is bordered by Uptown to the north, Lincoln Square and North Center to the west, Lincoln Park to the south, and Lake Michigan to the east.

The community area is bounded by West Irving Park Road and West Montrose Avenue on the north, North Ravenswood Avenue on the west, West Diversey Parkway on the south, and the Lake Michigan shoreline on the east.

Development

The area was originally used as a camp and trail path by the Miami, Ottawa, and Winnebago peoples. European settlement began in 1837 when Swiss immigrant Conrad Sulzer arrived, and the Hotel Lakeview, built in 1853, drew new residents as a refuge during a Chicago cholera outbreak. The township’s population grew from about 2,000 in 1870 to 45,000 by 1887, and Lake View was annexed into the City of Chicago in 1889.

Parks & Recreation

Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, sits in Lakeview’s Wrigleyville section. Belmont Harbor provides lakefront boating access, and the Lake Michigan shoreline within Lakeview includes the Jarvis Bird Sanctuary within Lincoln Park.

Transit

The CTA serves Lakeview with six rail stations: Addison and Sheridan (Red Line), Belmont (Red, Brown, and Purple Lines), Wellington (Brown and Purple Lines), and Paulina and Southport (Brown Line).
