Wicker Park, Bucktown, and Logan Square are adjacent Chicago neighborhoods on the city’s Northwest Side, linked by Milwaukee Avenue and the Bloomingdale Trail elevated greenway. Wicker Park sits within the West Town community area, bounded by the Bloomingdale Trail to the north, Ashland Avenue to the east, Division Street to the south, and Western Avenue to the west, covering about 166 acres. Bucktown lies immediately north of Wicker Park. Logan Square is bounded by the Metra Milwaukee District North rail line to the west, the North Branch of the Chicago River to the east, Diversey Parkway to the north, and the Bloomingdale Trail to the south, and comprises five constituent areas: Logan Square, Bucktown, Palmer Square, Belmont Gardens, and Kosciuszko Park.
Development
Alderman Charles Wicker and his brother Joel purchased 80 acres along Milwaukee Avenue in 1870 and platted a subdivision around a 4-acre central park. German and Norwegian merchants built substantial homes along what was known as “Beer Baron Row,” and Polish immigrants became the dominant population by the turn of the century, with the intersection of Division, Milwaukee, and Ashland known as “Kostkaville.” Bucktown’s name derives from goats that residents once kept in their yards. Logan Square was settled in the 1830s by pioneers including Martin Kimbell and was annexed by Chicago in 1889; its boulevard system centers on the Illinois Centennial Monument, a 70-foot marble column designed by Henry Bacon, architect of the Lincoln Memorial, and completed in 1918.
Parks & Recreation
Wicker Park, the 4-acre Chicago Park District park that gave the neighborhood its name, remains its central gathering space. Palmer Square Park, at 7.68 acres, and Kosciuszko Park, dedicated in 1916, serve Logan Square. The Bloomingdale Trail, an elevated greenway also known as The 606, runs along the shared border of Wicker Park, Bucktown, and Logan Square.
Transit
The CTA Blue Line serves the area at Division and Damen in Wicker Park, and at Western, California, and Logan Square, with 24-hour service to O’Hare International Airport, downtown Chicago, and Forest Park.
