All West Loop / Fulton Market in Chicago

West Loop and Fulton Market are adjacent neighborhoods within Chicago’s Near West Side community area, immediately west of the Loop across the Chicago River. West Loop is approximately bounded by Grand Avenue to the north, Ashland Avenue to the west, the Eisenhower Expressway to the south, and the Chicago River to the east, and includes the Fulton River District and Greektown. The Fulton Market District sits within West Loop’s northern end, centered on Randolph and Lake Streets running east-west and Halsted Street running north-south.

Development

Fulton Market functioned through the 19th and 20th centuries as a center for meatpacking, wholesale produce, and other warehouse and industrial uses. A 74-acre portion, the Fulton-Randolph Market District, received Chicago Landmark District designation in 2015. Beginning in the 2010s, the district transitioned toward corporate offices, technology companies, hospitality, and dining, attracting headquarters for companies including McDonald’s, Kimberly-Clark, Dyson, Herman Miller, and Mondelez, and becoming one of Chicago’s highest-value commercial real estate markets.

Parks & Recreation

Mary Bartelme Park, a Chicago Park District park named for Illinois’s first female judge, serves the West Loop’s residential blocks with green space and a dog-friendly area.

Transit

The CTA Green and Pink Lines stop at Morgan, serving Fulton Market, with additional CTA bus routes throughout West Loop. Chicago Union Station and the Ogilvie Transportation Center sit just east of the neighborhood.
